Russia launched devastating airstrikes on Ukraine during Christmas, targeting energy infrastructure and leaving millions vulnerable in freezing conditions. The strikes resulted in one fatality in Dnipropetrovsk and six injuries in Kharkiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, calling them inhumane and accusing Russia of intentionally targeting critical infrastructure during the holiday season.
In response, United States President Joe Biden announced an urgent surge in military aid to Ukraine. Biden criticized the attacks as attempts to cut off essential energy supplies during winter, describing them as an attack on civilian life and safety. He directed the Department of Defense to expedite the delivery of weapons and air defense systems to Ukraine.
Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, the United States has committed $61.4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Recent aid packages have included advanced drones, missile defense systems, and ammunition. Despite these efforts, Biden faces a narrowing window of opportunity, as his term ends on January 20. President-elect Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about continued support for Ukraine, calling for a reevaluation of US involvement in the conflict.
Biden’s administration is using the remaining $4 billion in military funding under the Presidential Drawdown Authority and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative to send critical supplies. This includes advanced weaponry designed to counter Russia’s increasing reliance on airstrikes and drone warfare.
The urgency behind these measures stems from the Biden administration’s concern over potential policy changes under Trump. During his campaign, Trump criticized the “blank check” approach to Ukraine, raising doubts about the future of US support. In contrast, Biden reaffirmed the US commitment to standing with Ukraine until it triumphs over Russian aggression.
Amid the escalating conflict, Zelenskyy praised international efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. He emphasized the importance of continued global support, noting that Ukrainian resilience remains strong despite Russia’s relentless attacks.
