Trump sentenced in Hush Money case: no jail, no fine

Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, received a sentence with no penalties in his New York hush money case. Judge Juan M. Merchan chose not to impose jail time, probation, or fines, allowing Trump to assume the presidency as the first convicted felon to hold the office. The case, centering on falsified business records linked to payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, marked a historic moment as the first trial of a former president.

Trump, appearing virtually, maintained his innocence, calling the trial a “political witch hunt.” Prosecutors supported the no-penalty sentence but criticized Trump’s attacks on the legal system, stating they undermined public trust and endangered court officials.

The trial, which detailed efforts to conceal alleged extramarital affairs during the 2016 campaign, had no impact on Trump’s political standing, as voters reelected him. Trump’s legal team plans to appeal the conviction, and the President-elect has resumed preparing for his new administration.

The decision concludes a contentious case, leaving other criminal charges against Trump in limbo. Legal experts remain divided on the broader implications of the sentencing for the integrity of the judicial system.
