Erdogan claims Türkiye’s position on Gaza will be vindicated

On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s position on Gaza, asserting that history would ultimately vindicate the nation’s stance, just as it did in Syria. Speaking at the Türkiye Exporters Assembly event in Istanbul, Erdogan expressed confidence that the international community would recognize Türkiye’s firm stand against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye is the only nation to have completely halted trade with Israel in protest of the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza. In May 2024, Türkiye severed all trade relations with Israel, which amounted to an estimated $9.5 billion, in response to what Erdogan called Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza. Despite the United Nations Security Council’s call for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive, resulting in nearly 45,600 casualties, mostly women and children, since October 2023.

Israel has imposed a harsh blockade on Gaza, causing widespread starvation among its population, particularly in northern Gaza. Türkiye, on the other hand, has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s actions and has offered substantial humanitarian aid to Gaza. This includes essential supplies such as food, medical equipment, and the evacuation of thousands of injured individuals.

Erdogan’s words come as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with international calls for a ceasefire intensifying. Türkiye has long been an advocate for Palestinian rights and remains steadfast in its condemnation of Israel’s military actions.

Despite the growing international pressure for peace and the numerous resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire, the Israeli government has shown little sign of halting its military operations in Gaza. As the situation continues to unfold, President Erdogan’s call for history to affirm Türkiye’s position stands as a reflection of the nation’s unwavering commitment to its values and support for Gaza.
