Military denies involvement in Nov 26 crackdown on PTI supporters

The Pakistan military attributes the rise in terrorism to political support for illegal activities and governance failures. Speaking at a press conference, ISPR Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry highlighted how political backing obstructs measures under the Revised National Action Plan and Azm-i-Istehkam. He called for strict laws and enforcement to dismantle the illegal spectrum, which fuels terrorism and lawlessness.

Pakistan witnessed over 1,200 terrorist attacks in 2024, claiming more than 2,000 lives, including 383 military personnel. Despite counterterrorism operations killing 925 militants and conducting nearly 60,000 intelligence-based operations, violence remains widespread. The Afghan Taliban’s 2021 rise empowered groups like the TTP and offered them sanctuaries, exacerbating the situation. Governance lapses in militancy-prone regions further intensify the crisis, requiring urgent attention to education, healthcare, and justice.

Lt Gen Chaudhry criticized the PTI government’s 2021 decision to negotiate with the TTP, describing it as misguided and harmful. This approach allowed militants to regroup, endangering law enforcement personnel and undermining national security. He noted that while the military has consistently opposed such moves, it continues to bear the brunt of the flawed strategy.

The military refuted allegations of its involvement in the Nov 26 crackdown on PTI protesters. Lt Gen Chaudhry clarified that the Army’s role was restricted to securing the Red Zone and that deployed personnel were unarmed. He attributed the escalation of violence to armed protesters and PTI guards, dismissing claims of excessive force.

Addressing the violence in Kurram district, the military emphasized that the clashes stem from tribal land disputes, not terrorism. Lt Gen Chaudhry urged civilian leaders to mediate and resolve these conflicts, while assuring that law enforcement and the Army will support efforts to restore peace. The ongoing unrest has led to significant loss of life and prolonged blockades, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
