In a significant statement, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, highlighted Pakistan’s escalating concerns about terrorism. He highlighted terrorist outfits being granted sanctuaries and support on Afghan territory. Addressing a press conference in Rawalpindi, the DG ISPR emphasized that unrestrained activities by such groups have become a major threat to Pakistan’s national security.
Rising Terrorism in 2024
Pakistan has witnessed a sharp increase in terrorist incidents, with 2024 recording the highest number of such attacks in the last five years. These attacks have particularly targeted law enforcement agencies in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to by the state as Fitna al Khawarij, has been at the forefront of these assaults. The situation worsened after the TTP broke a fragile ceasefire agreement in 2022.
Afghan Involvement Denied by Kabul
Islamabad has consistently raised concerns over TTP’s use of Afghan soil to launch cross-border attacks. The ISPR reiterated these claims during the briefing, presenting evidence of terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan. However, the Afghan government continues to deny these allegations, leading to strained relations and frequent border clashes between the two nations.
Pakistan’s Counterterrorism Measures
The ISPR spokesperson reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting the country. “Pakistan will leave no stone unturned to eliminate the terrorist networks and keep our citizens safe,” Gen Chaudhry stated. Recent counterterrorism efforts have led to the elimination of key wanted Baloch terrorists, with 14 militants surrendering to rejoin the national mainstream.
Challenges Along the Line of Control (LoC)
The DG ISPR also highlighted increased ceasefire violations by India, reporting 25 breaches along the Line of Control (LoC) this year. These violations add another layer of complexity to Pakistan’s security landscape, already strained by domestic and cross-border terrorism.
Amid these challenges, technical and legal steps are also being taken to secure the country’s digital infrastructure. Efforts are underway to counter cyber threats and ensure national security in the digital realm.
As terrorist activities and regional tensions rise, Pakistan remains resolute in addressing security challenges. The military’s firm stance on eliminating terrorism and maintaining peace reflects its commitment to safeguarding the nation. However, cooperation from Afghanistan remains critical for lasting stability in the region.
