The Taliban government issued decree to restrict construction of windows opening in areas used by women called it ‘obscene act’. Authorities also warn NGOs operating in Afghanistan to not employ women reportedly for breaching dress code.
On Saturday, Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban government spokesman proposed another ban considering women. The decree is issued that new buildings must avoid windows in the areas like “the courtyard, kitchen, neighbour’s well, and other places usually used by women.” Moreover, the municipal authority along relevant departments resolved to ensure the compliance of new laws. The statement further guided to install barriers for already existing windows to prevent view.
On the other hand, the news followed by another restriction on NGOs employing women. The Economic Ministry warned that they would close all national and foreign nongovernmental groups in Afghanistan employing women. Two years ago, the Taliban government asked all the national and foreign nongovernmental groups to suspend women’s employment. Allegedly, these NGOs did not direct women to wear headscarf as per Islamic laws.
Authority warns any violation will result into the cancellation of NGOs’ license to operate in Afghanistan. “In case of lack of cooperation, all activities of that institution will be canceled and the activity license of that institution, granted by the ministry, will also be canceled.”
Since 2021 after holding office, the Taliban government has imposed the series of relentless moral laws. They prohibited women from getting education beyond primary and employment. Women are advised to veil their voices in public and local media. They are not free to pursue medical education.
The international human right organization termed these polices gender apartheid. The Taliban regime called it alignment to Islamic principles which ensure the rights for men and women.
