TTP threatens Pakistan’s military-run businesses as violence rises

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban, has escalated its campaign against the Pakistani military. On January 5, 2025, the TTP intended to target military-run businesses. These include the National Logistics Cell, Frontier Works Organisation, Fauji Fertiliser Company, military-run housing authorities, and a commercial bank. The group also warned civilians to divest from these organizations within three months. Furthermore, it advised employees to seek alternative employment.

This marks a significant shift in the TTP’s strategy. Previously, the group focused primarily on military personnel and installations. However, by targeting military-run businesses, the TTP aims to weaken the military’s financial interests. Analysts suggest the TTP is capitalising on political divisions within Pakistan. The opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has criticized the military’s economic role. In response, PTI launched social media campaigns encouraging citizens to boycott military-affiliated businesses.

The TTP’s warning comes amidst rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban of providing safe havens for TTP insurgents. As a result, Pakistan has launched retaliatory airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Khost and Paktika provinces. The TTP’s strategy seems designed to pressure Pakistan into halting these strikes.

With this new threat, the TTP is expanding its scope. Analysts predict the attacks could escalate into urban areas. The group might target civilian infrastructure, further destabilizing Pakistan. This new focus is a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges Pakistan faces. The TTP’s tactics highlight the need for a comprehensive counterterrorism approach, addressing both military and civilian vulnerabilities.
