US approves $8 billion arms deal for Israel during Gaza conflict

The Biden administration has approved an $8 billion arms deal to bolster Israel’s military capabilities amidst its conflict in Gaza. This package includes advanced fighter jet ammunition, artillery shells, and precision-guided munitions, ensuring Israel’s access to critical defense resources. Israeli news outlet Walla revealed that the arms deal also incorporates AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles for helicopters, and JDAM systems, which convert unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons.

The approval comes as Israel intensifies its operations in northern Gaza, targeting areas like Jabalia Refugee Camp, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun. These strikes have already claimed over 45,600 lives, mostly women and children, drawing global condemnation. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, accusing them of war crimes in Gaza. Despite these allegations, the US remains a steadfast supporter of Israel, supplying 69% of its military aid.

The State Department informed Congress that the arms deal aims to replenish Israel’s defense stockpiles and enhance its long-term security. Critics argue that these supplies could escalate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where a UN resolution has called for an immediate ceasefire. This move contradicts earlier concerns by the US about possible misuse of American weapons in violations of international law.

As Tel Aviv’s military campaign continues, international organizations urge the US to reconsider its involvement, citing the devastating humanitarian impact on Gaza’s civilians. The arms deal further underscores the complexities of US-Israel relations and raises questions about accountability in ongoing global conflicts.
